MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: Members of the Tuskegee Airmen are some of the most highly decorated military pilots in our nation’s history, but David Martin shows us one honor that was overlooked for more than 70 years, until now.
TEEN PILOT BREAKS RECORD: A 19-year-old pilot is inspiring a new generation of women by setting the world record for being the youngest woman to fly solo around the world: “If you don’t try and see how high you can fly, then you’ll never know."
JAN. 6 INVESTIGATION: Ivanka Trump has been called to appear before the committee investigating the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. The committee plans to ask her about conversations she had with her father that day and his communication with former Vice President Pence.
BREAKING: Trump has failed to block the release of his White House records from the Congressional committee investigating Jan 6, meaning hundreds of pages that capture the communications and meetings leading up to January 6th will be released, @CBS_Herridge reports.
TRUMP INVESTIGATION: New information from the NY Attorney General’s office alleges there is “significant evidence” of fraud committed by the Trump Organization in order to obtain better loan and tax rates.z
VOTING RIGHTS SHOWDOWN: Senate Democrats are struggling to pass legislation that would protect both the rights of voters and the integrity of all federal elections. With one pair of “holdouts” in their own party, they’re also facing a wall of Republican opposition.
BRONX EXPLOSION: One person was killed and many were injured when a suspected gas explosion resulted in the collapse of an apartment building in the Bronx. The incident comes a little more than a week after 17 people were killed in an apartment fire less than three miles away.
GIULIANI SUBPOENAED: The House Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the capitol has issued subpoenas to some of former Pres. Trump’s closest advisers, including Rudy Giuliani. The committee continues to widen its scope and is getting closer to Trump’s inner circle.
#MLKDAY: It was nearly 57 years ago that Martin Luther King Jr. led a crowd of about 25,000 in the Selma-to-Montgomery march for voting rights. At the end of the march he stood at the steps of the state capitol and delivered what became known as his “How long, not long” speech.
Novak Djokovic returned to his home country of Serbia today after being banned from defending his Australian Open title for refusing to be vaccinated for COVID. Today the French Sports Ministry said Djokovic also won’t be allowed to play in the French Open without a vaccine.
VOTING RIGHTS PUSH: Today President Biden and Vice President Harris paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., vowing to carry the civil rights icon’s legacy by pushing for greater protection of voting rights. #MLKDay
Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff volunteered at Martha's Table in Washington, D.C. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The vice president helped pack bags of groceries that will be distributed to people in the surrounding area.
HONORING BETTY WHITE: Fans of the actress Betty White are honoring her 100th birthday by donating to animal wildlife charities and shelters in what’s known as the #BettyWhiteChallenge.
DEATH OF A HERO: Brigadier General Charles Mcgee, one of the last of the Tuskegee Airmen and who flew 409 combat missions from World War II to Vietnam, died at his home in Maryland. He was 102.
TSUNAMI WARNINGS: A tsunami advisory was in effect for parts of the West Coast of the United States and Alaska after a volcano erupted in the Pacific.
REKINDLED LOVE: A couple who broke up 42 years ago because their family wasn’t supportive of their interracial relationship have found each other again. @SteveHartmanCBS takes us On the Road with this story of a rekindled romance.
HEARTWARMING RESCUE: A lucky dog named Sammy is back with her family in Seattle a week after their home was destroyed in a landslide. Sammy was rescued by firefighters after days of being trapped in a tight space and surviving on rainwater.
